2019 Subaru Forester: A Pre-Owned Buying Guide

Shopping for a used Forester near Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton or Lake Worth? Use this model-year guide to narrow your shortlist, then compare the mileage, condition, history and installed equipment of the actual vehicles available. A 2019 vehicle should be evaluated as pre-owned, not as a current new-model offer.

What Changed for 2019?

The redesigned U.S. 2019 Forester introduced the fifth generation. Its 2.5-liter engine produces 182 horsepower and pairs with a Lineartronic CVT. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology were standard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration were also standard. DriverFocus was included on Touring; it was not standard across every trim. These systems assist an attentive driver.

2019 Forester Trim Differences

  • Base: The starting configuration for buyers who prioritize the standard powertrain and driver-assistance equipment.
  • Premium: Adds a panoramic moonroof, power driver's seat and X-MODE. Check the option package for heated seats, blind-spot assistance and a power rear gate.
  • Sport: Orange accents, 18-inch wheels, dual-function X-MODE and paddle-shift controls distinguish it. Sport is not a separate turbocharged engine.
  • Limited: Includes leather-trimmed upholstery, blind-spot assistance and a power rear gate.
  • Touring: Adds DriverFocus, navigation, Harman Kardon audio and heated rear seats.

Seven Checks Before Buying a Used Forester

  1. History and maintenance: Ask for available service records and vehicle-history information, then discuss any gaps or prior repairs.
  2. Tires and wheels: Review tread, tire condition and whether the installed tire sizes match the vehicle's requirements.
  3. Cabin comfort: Try the driver's adjustments and air conditioning, sit in the rear seat and bring the items you regularly carry.
  4. Technology: Connect your phone, check the rear camera and ask for a demonstration of installed assistance features. Do not deliberately provoke a safety intervention.
  5. Road test: Compare visibility, braking feel, steering and parking during a normal test drive. Ask about warning lights or unusual noises.
  6. Inspection and recalls: Ask what has been inspected or reconditioned and check the VIN for open recalls through our recall resource.
  7. Complete purchase terms: Review an itemized quote, included coverage and any optional protection separately. Ask about an independent inspection if you want one.
