Build a car-shopping budget before choosing your Subaru
Start with a comfortable ownership budget, then compare vehicles that fit your daily drive. Schumacher Subaru of Delray can help shoppers from Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton and Lake Worth review a specific vehicle and an itemized purchase proposal. Your personal budget and a lender's approval decision answer different questions.
Look beyond the monthly loan payment
Include the vehicle price, taxes, registration, applicable fees and any optional products you choose. Allow for insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance and repairs in your ongoing budget. Compare the amount financed, annual percentage rate (APR), loan term, finance charge and total payments. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while increasing the total interest paid.
A six-step vehicle-budget worksheet
- Choose a comfortable monthly ownership amount. Write down what fits alongside your existing commitments and savings priorities; leave room for expenses that vary.
- Request an insurance estimate. Use the exact year, model and trim you are considering rather than assuming all Subarus cost the same to insure.
- Plan your everyday use. Record your expected annual mileage, commute, parking needs and whether home charging is practical for an electric vehicle.
- Set aside your upfront funds. Decide what you are comfortable paying at purchase and ask which charges are included in that amount.
- Compare complete written proposals. Keep the same vehicle, down payment and term when comparing APR and payment estimates. Identify optional items separately.
- Check the fit before deciding. Test the seating, cargo space and controls, then review the final figures and documents before signing.
Use our test-drive checklist to compare two vehicles beyond their payment estimates.
How a down payment and trade-in affect the amount financed
A down payment can reduce borrowing. For a trade-in, compare its appraised value with its current loan payoff. If the payoff is higher, the difference is negative equity. Including that balance in a new loan increases the amount borrowed; ask how it changes your proposal. A trade-in does not automatically reduce your financing.
Have your vehicle's year, model, mileage and payoff information ready when discussing an appraisal. Share sensitive financial documents only through the appropriate secure process, rather than a general website message.
Questions to bring to Delray's finance team
- What is the itemized purchase price, and which items are optional?
- What cash is due at purchase and what amount will be financed?
- What APR and term apply, and what are the finance charge and total payments?
- Are estimates conditional on credit approval, incentive eligibility or other requirements?
- How do the trade-in value and payoff appear in the figures?
