What does a Subaru basic warranty cover?
A basic new-car limited warranty covers eligible defects under the terms in the vehicle's warranty booklet. The phrase "bumper-to-bumper" does not mean every part, maintenance visit or repair is covered. Before buying, compare the exact model year, original in-service date, mileage, exclusions and any separate coverage you are considering.
2026 versus 2027: check the model year
Subaru has announced changes to certain wear-item, adjustment and seat-belt coverage beginning with 2027 model-year vehicles. The date you buy the vehicle does not change its model year. A remaining 2026 vehicle and a new 2027 vehicle should be compared using their own warranty documents.
- Wear items: the announced 2027-and-later limits for wiper blades, brake pads or linings, and the clutch are 12 months or 12,000 miles.
- Wheel-alignment adjustments: the announced 2027-and-later limit is also 12 months or 12,000 miles.
- Seat belts: Subaru's announcement lists 120 months with unlimited mileage for 2027-and-later vehicles.
For the listed wear items and alignment adjustments, Subaru's notice contrasts those limits with 36 months or 36,000 miles before model year 2027; it also identifies the previous seat-belt coverage as lifetime. These are category-specific changes, not a statement that the entire basic warranty has been shortened to one year. Where a time and mileage limit both apply, coverage ends at the first limit reached. Eligibility, covered conditions, exclusions and the start date must be confirmed in the applicable Owner Information Kit and warranty booklet.
Bring these questions to your vehicle comparison
- Which warranty booklet applies to this VIN and model year?
- When did the original warranty begin, and how much time and mileage remain?
- Is the issue a covered defect, a wear item, an adjustment, routine maintenance or damage?
- Are diagnosis, deductibles, roadside assistance and any rental benefits included for this situation?
- If this is pre-owned, is it specifically Subaru Certified Pre-Owned, and what written coverage comes with it?
- How does an optional service agreement differ from the factory warranty and a maintenance plan?
