Factory Warranty or Extended Service Agreement: What Is the Difference?
When choosing your next Subaru, understanding coverage can help you plan for ownership costs. A factory warranty and an optional extended service agreement have different terms. Compare the vehicle, coverage and total price together so you can choose what fits your driving and ownership plans.
Start With the Coverage Already on the Vehicle
Ask our Delray team to identify the applicable factory warranty booklet, original in-service date and remaining coverage for the exact VIN. Different warranty categories can have different time and mileage limits. A pre-owned vehicle may have remaining factory coverage, but age or a dealership listing alone does not establish what remains.
For a Subaru Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, review the written CPO coverage separately. It is important to understand which components are covered and when the term began. Learn about Subaru Certified Pre-Owned before comparing it with an ordinary used vehicle.
What Is Subaru Added Security?
Subaru Added Security is an optional extended service agreement backed by Subaru of America. It provides specified repair protection under the selected agreement. Subaru's Gold Plus plan covers major mechanical systems and eligible technology components, subject to its exclusions and terms. Coverage is not a promise that every repair, body part or maintenance item is included.
Subaru calculates the plan term from the start of the factory warranty and zero miles. That means a plan described by years and mileage should not be read as adding that entire period after your original warranty ends. Ask us to confirm the actual end date and odometer limit for your vehicle.

Six Questions Before Choosing Coverage
- Who backs the agreement? Confirm the company responsible for covered claims and who administers them.
- What does it cover? Compare covered systems, exclusions and any existing coverage that overlaps.
- When does it end? Confirm the start date, expiration date and total odometer limit.
- What will I pay? Request the total price and deductible, including how the deductible applies per visit.
- How do repairs work? Ask about authorized repair locations, claim approval and any applicable rental or towing benefits.
- What if my plans change? Review cancellation, refund and transfer terms in writing.
Does Extended Coverage Include Maintenance?
Do not assume a mechanical repair agreement pays for scheduled oil changes, tires or every wear item. A maintenance plan is a separate product with its own services and limits. Ask for an itemized explanation of each product before deciding.
