Optional credit-protection video

Use the written guide below for the distinction between fraud alerts and security freezes.

Preparing to finance a vehicle includes protecting your personal information. Use this checklist before sharing documents or starting an application, whether you are shopping in Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach or Lake Worth.

Credit freeze or fraud alert: what is the difference?

A security freeze prevents prospective creditors from accessing your credit file. Freezes and temporary lifts are free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion; contact each company separately. A fraud alert tells creditors checking your report to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. An alert does not block access in the same way as a freeze.

If your credit is frozen and you plan to apply for financing, ask which reporting company the lender needs to access and arrange any temporary lift yourself through that company's official process. You can still review vehicles and prepare questions before applying.

Five checks before a vehicle-financing application

  1. Review your credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts or information that needs correction before your appointment.
  2. Verify the destination. Reach our finance resources through this website rather than an unexpected message or unfamiliar link.
  3. Keep documents private. Ask the finance team for its secure application or document process. Do not put Social Security numbers, banking details or identity-document images in a general contact message.
  4. Prepare your questions. Ask about the amount financed, loan term, APR, total payments and optional products before deciding.
  5. Save your records. Keep copies of the documents you sign and the terms you agree to, and review later account statements.

Suspect identity theft?

Use the official recovery guidance at IdentityTheft.gov. For the distinction between these credit protections, consult the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's credit-freeze guidance.
